Using Little Snapper with DropBox

Added by 55disk on 22 February 2010

I use Little Snapper all the time for collecting screenshots of websites and my work, it’s a great way of saving all those snippets of creativity. I use two machines my desktop and my laptop and I needed a way to keep both of these in sync. I also wanted to be able to edit and use Little Snapper on both machines, although not at the same time so that if I was casually using my laptop on the sofa it would automatically update when I used my work computer.

I do this by using Little Snapper and DropBox – If you want to do this then here’s how:

1. You will need a copy of Little Snapper

2. You will also need a Dropbox account (remember the more images you store in little snapper the more your dropbox account will expand).

3. Install Little Snapper

4. In Little Snapper go to the Preferences then Advanced choose Create New Library

5. Name the Library whatever you want and save the location to your DropBox

6. Close down Little Snapper, and go to your second machine or installation of Little Snapper.

7. On the second machine load up Little Snapper and go to Preferences – Advanced and select Choose for the Library

8. Select the Library from your DropBox one (you just created)

9. Close down the application down, now open it up again and hey presto you now have the same Little Snapper database between both machines.

The database will now sync between machines as you add new items to it, if you do this for the first time and have a large DB of data wait for Dropbox to sync completly before opening Little Snapper.

Having just the one copy of the Little Snapper database is great and it means I can use either machine to save a collate ideas into the program and will be updated to the other machine.

    Great guide! Thanks!

However, in step 8 above, the dropbox library is greyed out on my second Mac when trying to choose it from LittleSnapper. I can’t choose it!

Have you encountered something similar, or know what might be the problem?

  3. admin Says:

Hi Nick, no I haven’t experienced the problem you describe, mine seems to work fine – sorry I can’t help with that.

  4. Daniel Says:

I really like littlesnapper and have been using it with dropbox for a while now. Only problem is if you leave it open on multiple computers and add images to both, the last one you close overwrites everything. It’s extremely annoying when you accidentally leave it open at the office, add and tag a bunch of things from home, and all that work disappears because it gets written over. Anybody know of a way to avoid that? Im not sure how well ember works, don’t think it works across machines. I’m hoping LittleSnapper catches up with software like evernote, dropbox soon, but that has been the story for a few years now.

Hi Daniel, when I wrote about this as a solution it would really only work if you only used the Little Snapper database on one machine at a time. Not tried having two versions open at once, and now I would take your advice not to..

    thanks Simon

Thanks! I found this article is VERY useful, especially when we have 2 computers.

But, it seems I had a syncing problem between my 2 computers. Say, that my iMac snap + sync new data to dropbox, and it should be auto sync when I opened Littlesnapper on my Macbook, but I didnt found the last snap from my iMac..

Can you how to fix it? THX

    nice one Simon!

    Hi,
I would like to save and share screenshots with my team at work, so that everyone can contribute to the library.

Anyone got a solution to this please ?

  9. 55disk Says:

I agree the solution here is for Little Snapper to have some sort of integration with Dropbox, which isn’t my solution as it only works if you use one instance of Little Snapper at a time.

Nick mentioned that “in step 8 above, the dropbox library is greyed out on my second Mac when trying to choose it from LittleSnapper. I can’t choose it!” I had the same issue. I was able to resolve the issue by updating Little Snapper on my desktop computer via the Apple App Store. Hope this helps others with similar issues.
